When I first started coaching what surprised me was how many of my clients had been to see a psychologist and/or psychiatrist - some of them have been to several over the years, and even more surprising was how many were on anti-depressants just to get through the day.
If traditional therapy worked so well, then why were my clients not better?
I am not knocking the medical profession (I have a Psychology degree myself), but I want to give you the main reasons why seeing the right person is crucial to your mental and emotional well-being.
The problem is: you go to a psychologist to TALK about your problem, or a psychiatrist to MEDICATE your problem. Medicating can work in some instances to stabilize your condition, but they are not a long term solution, but let's talk about the first problem.
What you focus on gets bigger. If you spend weeks/months/years focusing on your problem, you are making it BIGGER. Discussing every angle of what went wrong is not going to make it go away!
Secondly, and this is important, your beliefs and values are stored in your subconscious mind. When you think and talk about a problem you are in your conscious and rational mind. There is no way you can change your subconscious beliefs through your conscious mind - you can only to access them through your subconscious mind which does not work on thinking, but works on feeling.
Now I know that talking will help you to get the tools you need, but it won't solve your underlying negative beliefs and emotions that have been stuck as a result of your problem.
And you also know that going to a psychologist can take you 5 years before you can start seeing results. Who has the time and the money to do that for 5 years?

Uncovering and removing your negative subconscious beliefs works on an emotional level, which has a quicker and much more far-reaching effect than talking will ever do. And the inner transformation is a wonderful experience to behold.
