The present is all there is.
The past is over.
The future hasn’t happened yet.
When you live in the present, you have access to all your dreams, your potential and you are in a place where you are free to be, do or have anything you want.
Awareness is the state or condition of being aware, having knowledge or being conscious.
When you live your life in a state of awareness then you are living a life that is creative, rather than reactive.
If that is the case, then why don’t we live in the present?
It’s because we are clouded by our past experiences, our pains and our traumas, and our belief systems.
In order to overcome our past we first need to become AWARE.
When a young elephant is brought to it’s trainer, he ties it’s leg to a pole so that it can’t walk away. However, as the elephant grows up, it can easily pull the pole out of the ground and simply walk away, but it doesn’t. It has been trained that pulling against the pole is futile. The chain is too strong, and it will get in trouble with the trainer.
A big elephant doesn’t see itself in the light of it’s adult state. It is clouded by it’s experiences growing up and believes that the chain is too strong. So it remains tied by a flimsy chain and it's experience alone.
There are hundreds of books, videos and teachings out there that teach you how to clear your belief systems, so why don’t we do it?
Breaking free of our beliefs and conditioning is simple, but hard to do. Here are a few reasons why:
Fear and overwhelm - we think that looking into our dark past and our secrets is like opening Pandora’s box. That all the pain will come flooding in and we won’t know how to cope with it. Instead we keep the door tightly locked.
Lack of knowledge – misconception that it is hard work to let go, not being aware that it is possible to let go, or not knowing how to let go.
Not wanting to take responsibility – it’s easier to blame someone else or circumstances for your lot in life. However, blame does not fool anyone, and in the end, ALL of your life experiences come back to you, there is no way around it.
Learning a new habit - What’s easy to do is also easy not to do, but it comes at a price. Signing up to the gym does not give you the exercise you need, you must actually do the work. Most people set the standard so high that they give up before they have even started. If you want to build a new habit you start with just 5 minutes a day. This helps to train you to do something, even if you don’t feel like it, but with minimal effort.
The Role of Pain
As human beings we learn and evolve through pain. It is our brain's way of ensuring that we do not repeat the same experiences again. For most people, the pain is not great enough in order to seek lasting change. They go through their lives, living in a "comfort zone" where they are listless, unexcited, bored, uninspired, and hoping that somehow things will change for the better "one day".
However, for some there is a tipping point. An existential crisis or ongoing pain can result in the person looking for ways to ease the pain.
This can either be an accumulation of physical or emotional pain, such as abuse, or it can be a result of a traumatic incident, such as a hijacking or a near-death experience.
The Path to Freedom
Letting go of your pain is the true path to inner freedom. It is in the letting go that you surrender your ego, you stop holding onto grudges, negative experiences and where forgiveness liberates you.
People are scared to let go of their pain, because they think that their memories are serving to keep them safe. They think that if they forget the pain, they will get hurt again. What they actually need to do is learn how your brain functions.
Your brain’s job is to keep you alive, that is it’s sole function. When you are growing up, your subconscious is taking in all the stimulus and all the experiences and using the data, just like a computer, to keep you alive. It knows what behaviour you need to go into in order to stay safe, and what works and what doesn’t work.
When you experience a trauma, you DON’T WANT TO LET IT GO, because the memory of the trauma is what is keeping you safe. Your brain is afraid that if you let go of the memory that you will be subject to another trauma which is dangerous.
There is always a lesson to be learned from our experiences, that is how we grow and evolve. If you experience a trauma and you don't learn the lesson, then you will get stuck in that moment in time, repeating it over and over again in your subconscious.
If, instead, you look for the learning or the lesson, then you will be able to let go of the pain and keep the learning. You do not need to let go of the memory, instead it will be integrated into your life and make you feel more whole.
The Emotional Body
When you close your eyes and just observe how your emotional state is, then you are connecting to your emotional body.
When you experience pain or trauma, it gets stored in specific locations in your emotional body. For example, anger is often stored in the liver, grief is stored in the chest.
If there are similar circumstances that trigger a similar pain or trauma, your physical and your emotional body will react in the place where the memory is stored. This triggers your brain to act in the same way that it does to keep you safe.
By clearing the body memory of the pain, you are able to react in a new way that creates freedom rather than fear.
